Cigarette: Fire at one end, a fool at the other, and a bit of tobacco in between!
This is probably one of the oldest quotes we have heard about cigarettes or about smoking... And I still continue to wonder why people smoke knowing very well the consequences of this deadly addiction! Are they not aware of the after-math of this devil called cigarette?
"Why do you smoke?" is one question I have repeatedly asked my friends.... Their answers have always amused me. Some say it is a good stress buster, others say it is just another addiction... Some others say that they are themselves not aware of the reason, many others feel that it is a fashion statement or rather a cool thing to do... but most of them say that they are not chain smokers and only take a few puffs a day (As if only chain smoking is considered smoking)! They only smoke because they have been doing it from years..! What strikes me is that most of these people don't have time to give this question a serious thought.
At the end of these very interesting answers I console myself saying smoking is just another addiction or only a spec in their rather impeccable personalities... Something which does not require this much attention and discussion... But no... There is something more interesting about these people that draw my attention back to scrutinize this issue.
Please remember that these people usually have a pleasing personality and are equally bubbly and vehement.. They hardly go unnoticed and you can almost at once be friends with them.
They have very good jobs, fat salaries and some even run their own enterprise with a dozen or more people working under them. You would be awe stuck with the kind of command they have over the subordinates, the influence over friends and clutched control they have over their family! They seem so powerful that you would not want to think much before you start admiring them.. But wait! take a closer look and you would understand that their jurisdiction of power and control is limited over their family, friends and subordinates... It is sad that they cant keep their own mind under their thumb. What if they have respectable jobs, what if they are a huge success in their career, what if they are influential...at the end of it all they are still slaves of their weak minds. They have no consideration for fellow beings ( because passive smoking is as dangerous as smoking itself), no respect for dear ones ( cos the fail to understand that they truly care for their well being) and no responsibility over their own state of health!
Hundreds of youngsters are picking up this habit everyday. A habit which would dilute their personality and attributes. Would these people wake up to reality and stand corrected one day? I am not writing this with the hope that people would read this and get transformed.. I am writing this because I still don't have an understanding of why people get into this addiction after having a good understanding of its consequences.. I only hope to get my question answered! If you know what you are doing is not the right thing and you are still doing it.. Is it not your temerity? There are millions of people who are suffering from cancer and we all know that tobacco is indeed a great contributor. Are we not inviting sufferings from this mindless habit? Is our mind not stronger than this intractable addiction? Cant we have stronger minds to reform ourselves? Why should we settle for consequences when we have a choice? After all if one gains victory over others he is only powerful... but if one gains victory over one's own mind he is really STRONG!

Good one, with nicely chosen words, with a mix of strength and understanding.. Its so true actually, as to the most successfull of the people from times immemorial have submitted themselves, voluntarily or involuntarily, to this habit. This is such an universal phenomenon and not restricted to any particular class of society. Ive been thinking about it quite from sometime, trying to categorise & classify the diff types of people, falling into this habit, but not able to draw any conclusive results from the same.
ReplyDeleteIts such a socialistic, secularistic and an universal habit, which has no differentiation with respect to the caste, creed, religion, the Rich, Middle class, the poor, the educated, the uneducated, n the well educated, offlate the man, the woman, the children...
In my writeup, i ve defined cigarette as :
CIGARETTE IS THAT, WHICH SLOWLY, BUT STEADILY AND SURELY TAKES AWAY THE LIFE OF THE LIFE, WHO GIVES LIFE TO THIS LIFELESS LIFE !!
Ive finished my writeup & wondering if i should publish or ask someone else to publish!!
So apt and dead on for a smoker to read and realise that his life is being tossed and juggled by a small piece of tobacco! What a pitiful state that is! I totally agree with u!!I only wish these ppl realise that there are few innocent lives dependent on them wholly and completely! Wake up ppl and create awareness in ur own mind of this bad habit and quit it cold turkey right away!
ReplyDelete@akhilesh: I am pleasantly surprised to get a comment like this from you... And pls go ahead and publish what you have written... let me see what the other side of the story is like.. :)
ReplyDelete@achu: I so knew you would like this one dear... after all my dear brother asked for this... :)
